The French Cafe – watercolours

ART is a fabulous GIFT

my mom

On Friday December 1st, I inaugurated a Christmas exhibition of small format paintings in my atelier-slash- art gallery on the French Riviera. I invited 6 other artists. The show lasted 3 days and the artists who I invited sold 55 artworks at 100 euro each. Santa Claus came to them this year! And his name was Angie.

Here are some of the collectable watercolours that are still available.

These food icons are available. Oil and gilding on wood panel

In 2001 I was living in Florence, Italy and I was painting Italian food. The first food painting was a celebration to Cacciucco, the complicated fish soup of Livorno. The painting won first prize in the Premio Italia and it was published on the cover of a Florentine art magazine. Twenty years later I’m painting French food and gilding them. I’ve decided to call them FOOD ICONS. Next time I’ll tell you when I began gilding.

Here’s some news from the French Riviera

Life on the Riviera is sunny but chilly this time of year. My exhibition of the Salt Flats that I worked on for 2 years is viewable for another ten days at the Nouvelle Galerie Massillon.

In April I posted about becoming the owner of this well-known gallery, then it gobbled me up. Managing it, creating my own work, and having a family is a lot to juggle. The chaos of it all slammed me into a mental fog bank.

I’m finally back painting after months of confusion.

Why was I confused? I didn’t know what to paint and didn’t know what to do with the gallery. What to exhibit. What art to focus on.

In France realism painting is old school. That’s what I do. I felt embarrassed to show my work in my own gallery. Can you believe it? I was trying to paint things that have nothing to do with me. I slept as much as I could. I even fell asleep driving after teaching a workshop on the beach. That was a wake-up call.

After a season of exhibitions by several different artists (and many naps) I settled into the gallery space with an exhibition of plein air paintings that I did on the historical salt flats. Surprisingly, it is the exhibition that has had the most success, especially with locals. That cleared the cloud of confusion and embarrassment. I also joined a facebook group for plein air painters and posted a photo of me painting on the salt flats. It got more comments and likes than many of my posts.

The Nouvelle Galerie Massillon is going to be a gallery for realism with a focus on plein air painters.

One of my goals is to create a plein air competition.
